Wide-field Imaging with a Tripod

The Very Basics

This is the simplest way to get involved with astrophotography. Wide-field means your digital camera is set to the widest settings, capturing the most light. For many star gazing hobbyists, this le vel is all they are interested in and are able to capture some amazing images.

the Moon, but not the craters

large sweep of a starry sky

Imagine yourself on a summer’s night, when the New Moon makes the sky nice and dark, the mosquitoes may be biting, and it may be two in the morning, but you end up with an amazing photo of Saturn’s rings, or on a crisp winter night, with your long underwear, and heated boots keeping you warm while you get a super cool image of the constellation Orion,the Hunter with snow covered tree tops in the background. Or during the spring equinox when it is the only time in the year a distant deep sky star cluster can be found.

Once you have been able to create some of these lovely astrophotos you will be hooked into a life long hobby. Digital camera have made this hobby easy, affordable and accessible to anyone interested in photographing the night time stars.
