Charge-Coupled Device Imaging

For the Pros and Super Hobbyist

This is the most advanced level, as it is complex and expensive. It is definitely not for the beginning astrophotographer. There is a steep learning curve and a large amount of patience and skill is needed. The information is included here only for information purposes. The techniques are beyond the beginners level, so not suited for a beginners guide.

This type of astrophotography works best when there is a telescope that is permanently located in one spot. You must use a special CCD camera, which is designed specifically for astrophotography. The CCD camera will be connected to both the telescope and a laptop. It allows for longer exposures, sometimes up to hours, that result in beautiful celestial objects seen in exquisite detail.

Best Use:

detailed exposures to far away objects

like nebulae or galaxies

Equipment:

a CCD camera,

a tracking telescope,

a guidescope or off-axis guider to attach to the scope

laptop computer and software
